What Are “Activities of Daily Living”?
For a senior citizen, the activities of daily living become
increasingly difficult. To an
elderly person with limited mobility or impaired eyesight, the simplest
activities become major tasks. The
activities of daily living include personal care activities, like bathing,
brushing teeth, and shaving. Other
activities of daily living are housekeeping tasks and seemingly insignificant
activities, like being able to move about the home or turn over in bed.
The activities of daily living are not limited to activities done inside
the home, however. When the
mobility of an elderly person is reduced, activities such as trips to the
supermarket and visits to the doctor become very difficult for the elderly
person to do alone. When an elderly
person is no longer able to do the activities of daily living independently, the
family or caregiver must decide how the elderly loved one is going to get the
help necessary to attend to the activities of daily living.
